Review: Lea Salonga shines at PNE Summer Nights

by KC Claveria | Filthy Pop | Vancouver Music Blog

Lea Salonga - PNE concert

Many Filipinos consider Lea Salonga as the Philippine’s finest entertainment export. Salonga is a successful Broadway actress, an accomplished singer, and a respected movie artist. She’s a Tony winner and has appeared in a number of TV shows in the US, including ER.

Last Sunday (August 28, 2011), I had the opportunity to watch Lea Salonga for the first time. Salonga was in Vancouver to perform at PNE Summer Nights.

Lea Salonga sang through her 90-minute set without missing a note. Tackling a good mix of classics from her back catalog and a number of covers, Salonga impressed the crowd of mostly Filipino-Canadians.

Dragonette rocks the 2011 Vancouver Outgames Closing Ceremonies

Dragonette at the Outgames

Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to see Dragonette at the Outgames Vancouver 2011 Closing Ceremonies. The trio brought the house down, bringing their eclectic sound to a small but very enthusiastic crowd at the Plaza of Nations.

I wasn’t actually planning on going to this event. Originally, I was going to see Manila Luzon perform at a pool party, but the promoters of that event messed up. I won tickets for that pool party from another blogger, but for some reason, TFD Presents, the promoter, didn’t have me on their guest list. Also, the pool party was apparently already at capacity when we got there, pissing off many other guys in the line up who already purchased their tickets.

Anyway, I didn’t want to make lots of fuss about not being able to get in, so my friends and I decided to go to the Outgames Closing Ceremonies instead. I really wanted to see Dragonette and Ace of Base anyway.

After a few hours of other performances (most of which are not really that noteworthy), Dragonette finally took the stage at around 7:30pm. The crowd immediately went insane; people were hesitant to go near the stage before, but with Dragonette, everyone wanted to be near.

The one big highlight of the set for me was their performance of “Summer is Set”. It’s such a fun song! “Hello” was another highlight. My friends and I were a bit disappointed that “Take it like a man” wasn’t performed.

Martina was electrifying to watch. She sounded great and she brought great energy.

I arrived at the Plaza of Nations at around 5:30, so I had a couple of hours to kill before Dragonette performed. Among other things, I rode a bike to get my strawberry daiquiri blended it. (You had to do the same thing if you wanted to buy a pina colada.) I thought that this was a fun concept, especially for an event like the Outgames. There were also a lot of food inside the plaza.

Ace of Base closed out the event, but unfortunately, I couldn’t stay for their performance. Dragonette was amazing though and I’m really glad I finally saw them live. You can expect me to be at their show the next time they visit Vancouver again — whenever that happens to be.

Review: Katy Perry brings the California Dream tour (and her blue wig) in Vancouver

by KC Claveria | Filthy Pop | Vancouver Music Blog

Katy Perry in Vancouver

With back-to-back-to-back #1 singles, Katy Perry is on a hot streak these days. And with a rumoured re-release coming soon, you can bet that the streak is set to continue. So it’s really no wonder that the Vancouver stop of her California Dreams 2011 Tour sold out. Almost 13,000 people were at Rogers Arena last night to see the pop star perform.

I’m happy to report that Katy actually delivered. Here are the highlights of the show for me:

  • Her rendition of “I wanna dance with somebody”. It was quite amazing that she brought a handful of fans on stage and even took a pic with one of them.
  • The 10-minute or so acoustic set, which included covers of Rihanna’s “Only Girl” and Willow Smith’s “Whip my Hair”.
  • Part of this acoustic set was Rebecca Black’s “Friday”. Interestingly enough, it worked.
  • The very subdued performance of “Not like the movies”. After seeing her perform this live, I can’t really ever accuse of her not being able to sing.
  • The hits — “E.T.”, “Firework”, California Girls, and Teenage Dream — were all exceptional, for no other reason than the fact that they’re fun to sing along to.
  • When she sang “Circle the Drain”, I was mildly shocked. It’s my fave from her album, but given the lyrical content of the song (and given that there were children in the crowd), I wasn’t expecting it on the playlist.

Review: Britney Spears brings Femme Fatale to Vancouver

by KC Claveria | Filthy Pop | Vancouver Music Blog

Britney Spears' Femme Fatale Tour — Vancouver (Review)Britney Spears was in Vancouver last night for a one-night stop of her Femme Fatale tour. I’ve never seen Britney live, but I’ve seen enough of her recent TV performances to know that she’s not the performer she used to be. Needless to say, my expectations were quite low.

Britney is up in less than 2 minutes. My expectations are low, but I'm gonna party w/ @ and @ like it's the late 90s again.

When we arrived, Nicki Minaj was already half way through her set. I’m very happy we were late. I don’t know much about her music, and seeing her live discouraged me to learn more about her. Most of her songs featured other artists, so Minaj spent a lot of time “dancing” instead of performing. The costume changes were slightly awkward as the stage were often left empty.

Review: Bruno Mars Rocks Vancouver

by KC Claveria | Filthy Pop | Vancouver Music Blog

Bruno Mars brought his Hooligans in Wondaland tour last Friday in Rogers Arena here in Vancouver. I’ve been a fan since I heard “Nothing On You”, and so I just knew I need to be at this concert.

Hooligans in Wondalang TourThe audience was very diverse. As expected, there were many (screaming) tweens, but I’ve also spotted middle-aged people, and even some toddlers. Most of the audience were women, but there were actually also a lot of men. I suppose I should have expected the audience diversity; Bruno Mars’ music is the type that appeals to the masses.
